Spoken Word by JP

“As a visual artist, I am personally and professionally invested in the concept of “art not just sitting on a wall” but being a functional asset within the home and global community.” -JP

I grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio in the early to mid 1990’s. I’ve traveled the world, done some amazing historical art and design work and met some amazing people along the way. I’ve also been able to settle down in the great city of Raleigh, North Carolina. Eleven years ago, I made the move to the Raleigh area and made it my home. And every year, I learn so much about this area and its people. Throughout my career, I have been able to establish great partnerships with amazing partners that, as a result, have improved the environments of many public community areas.

#jpyourlife And The My Brand Of Public Art

I’ve had some of my social media followers and my private collectors often tell me that they can see a “joyful diversity” in my work. I call it the #jpyourlife effect. As a professional artist and designer, I have the honor to tell a myriad or beautiful stories. My work has aided to unite diverse communities of people who were once disconnected by unfortunate economic and/or social circumstances. Bringing my brand of visual art making to predominately black communities within the United States, and until recently in South Africa, has been one of my career goals since I sold my first painting at 13 years old.

What I remember most about some of my most memorable public art projects are the diverse groups of people that I have been able to work with along the way. People often tell me that they can see the “joy” in my work and that’s where it initially comes from. It’s the foundational reason for my website jermainepowell.com and the tagline, “Own The Greatest™”. I have thoroughly enjoyed the art making experience, the idea of collaboration and project troubleshooting. This enables me to work on a variety of public and private design projects. I make sure that my design, techniques, and even my professional demeanor honors and fits the needs of the people who the work impacts the most.
